Social Security Taking Longer to Hear Cases; Denying More Claims

Social Security Disability and SSI claimants are waiting longer to have their cases heard.  The national average processing time for claims before the Office of Disability Adjudication and Review is up to 382 days (up from 372 since December) with 44% of cases being approved (down from 46% since December.  In Tennessee, the average processing time is 407 days (up from 388 days) with 50% of cases approved (down from 53%.

In terms of averages for local offices, Middlesboro leads with a low time of 366 (up from 322 days) (45% approved) with the Kingsport ODAR running at 326 days (58% approved). Unfortunately, Chattanooga is at 429 (up from 390 days) with 55% approved and Knoxville is at 457 days (up from 406 days) with 53% approved.  Unfortunately, these number confirm that on a whole the average processing times are going up everywhere while the percentage of case approved by Administrative Law Judges continues to decline.

The hearing office staff work hard and understand the frustrations of the claimants and representatives, but they are hamstrung by the workload and budgetary restraints.
