The common myth heard throughout this country today, whether it be through media coverage of certain politicians or the talk at the barbershop (usually fed by those certain politicians), is that everyone that applies for Social Security Disability or SSI gets approved. This myth only slightly beats out Myth #2 – my neighbor never worked a day in his life, there’s nothing wrong with him, and he draws disability. (we will touch on this one in coming weeks.
Back to the myth that everyone that applies gets approved. In Tennessee, for example, 75% of all persons who apply for benefits are denied at the application stage. Currently, 94.8% of those claimants are denied at the second stage of the process called “Reconsideration.” At the Administrative Law Judge hearing level, in Tennessee the approval rate is 50%, which is slightly above the national average of 44%. So even at the hearing level, half to more than half of claims are denied!
A lot of variables play into whether a claim is approved. The Social Security Administration looks at age, education, job skills, as well as mental and physical impairments.
